He uncocked his pistol and put it back in the holster. "Not a lot of glass makers around her Mrs. Davis...to be honest...but I'm sure that if it's patched up, you could send for something from back east, have it shipped over here...and yes ma'am. She loved the thread and fabric. Convinced I didn't pick it out. Which is true," he grinned then cleared his throat. "I'm sure...you will be able to manage. Of course, we could always cut the window out of the jailhouse just across the way and put it in as tempoarar. It looks to be about the right size for yours, We have a local carpenter can do the work in no time..." he swore and then smiled, looking at her. "It'll save you the trouble of ordering one from back east and see to it that your shop doesn't look so rough and tumble," he smirked.
Walking over to the counter, he grabbed the basket and then started to pick up the spilled contents. "Did you recognize any features in the man that tried to rob you? Distinct marks, height, build, it'll help narrow down the few around here that might of done it," he said simply before clearing his throat. "I can write it up and if I know who you're talking about, I can have him brought in. Robbery isn't a hanging offense but he could be sent off to the east, or spend the rest of the next five or so years in our little jail cell..." he said simply.
-----
Roxanne smirked. "I'm not a lady. Ladies live in nice houses in the eastern side of these states or across the ocean in Britain or France. I'm just a rancher's daughter...and as for men hurting ladies, or women, it is rather cowardly of them but...a lot of men don't see it that way. And it doesn't matter what Mr. Peterson does. My daddy will make excuses for him. We didn't have any money...before the war. Daddy had went bankrupt so we moved out here. I lived in a little shack with my mother and baby brother as my daddy went off to war. When he came back, he was given high honors by General Grant and a large settlement of money by the government. He turned that settlement into the ranch we have had today. Daddy doesn't want to get poor again. Even if he's one of the richest men in Paradise, marrying me off to someone who has almost the same amount of money ensures daddy will be able to never worry about his funds again. I don't want to marry him...but...I will...I have to follow what the bible says after all. Honor thy father and mother...I give daddy a hellacious time...but I'll do it."
She trailed off then cleared her throat and looked forward. "You seem like a good man Mr. Keith. ANd with your set of morals I'm sure any woman that ever gets hold of you will be a happy one indeed," she smiled, glancing at him then looking forward again, keeping her horse in line.

She watched him for a moment and shook her head. "You don't have to do that for me, Deputy." She was referring to the glass window but she knew that she would not be able to replace it since it would be very expensive for her little business. "I can only put a piece of wood in it for a few months." She said as she thought of the man that she had scared away. "He was young, probably only a boy who was drunk for the first time..." She mentioned as she pushed her red hair over her shoulder. "I think he had dark hair, no scars or marks on his face but his nose was a little crooked, probably got punched there recently. I just want a new window... he did not steal anything besides a few buttons." She chuckled as she went over to the fallen buttons and helped him pick them up. The sounds of the morning and the people waking up and starting their business.
"He was tall, lanky almost...? It was dark but he made a holler when I shot the wall. Called me a fuckin' bitch... pardon the language, Deputy." She said as she finished with the clean up of the button and he had the basket. Dropping the last few buttons, she looked up at him with a smile. "Thank you."
Going back behind the counter, she took the basket and put it by the cash box. "I would probably know who he is if I saw him again." She shrugged her shoulders feeling a little sad about the damages.
---
"Well, I can't have an opinion since your father is my employer but you should try to be happy in your life. You are still young and your father will not always be around... I wouldn't give up your happiness to please your father... and I beg your problem, Miss Roxanne but Mr. Peterson is not a suitable husband for any woman with dignity for herself." Malcolm mentioned as he shook the reins to quicken the pace. "Thank you for the compliment, Miss." He said in a quiet voice as the conversation seemed to drop. "I respect any man who fought in the war despite the side since most of the men did not know what they were fighting for..." He said but he did not get a cent for his service.

"It's not a problem. Small town, everyone has to help everyone out. Otherwise it might fall to pieces. I'll speak with someone about moving the window. We don't really have a need of it since there is almost always a draft and the door is almost always left open. We aren't looking to be pretty..." He smirked and then cleared his throat. "I was going to come by later but I might as well do this now..." He reached in his vest, pulling out an sheet of paper. "It's an order form my momma filled out, so that you know what to order next time you do so. And, here is half the money for it. She got about a hundred dollars worth. The woman gets spoiled by my older brothers and sisters though," he chuckled.
"Fixing his vest, he glanced at his time piece. It was getting close to eight now, and most shops would be up and running in no time. The bakery was already up and running, as was the tavern. "If you want, I can run to the tavern, get you a bit of breakfast. Or the bakery. The bakery has the best sticky buns this side of the Mississippi," he smiled at her, being charming but also not trying to flirt with her. To hard leastways.
-----
Roxanne looked at him. "No need to beg my pardon Mr. Keith. I respect a person that speaks their mind..." She sighed. "You must think me awfully spoiled," she said then smiled, glancing at him then looking away and forward as they moved into town. "And most men didn't. You are right about that. Father went for the glory. He was lucky enough to not die at Gettysburg or anywhere else he travelled. As is any man...glad I am I never saw anything...as horrible as war..." She sighed and looked at him before gazing ahead.
"And if you did have an opinion about my father, you are more than welcome to share. I keep very good secrets..." she said with a soft laugh. "Are you going to go to the social this Saturday Mr. Keith?" she asked curiously.

Taking the slip of paper from Deputy Harrison, she could not help herself but smile as she thought that it was nice that he cared for his mother. There was a feeling of slight jealousy because he had a family, where her own experiences where she had had a family only for it to be ripped away from her. "Well, lucky for your mother I will be sending an order today since the post will be going out. If you have come later, you might have missed it." She mentioned as her stomach growled when he was mentioning food and that made her blush before giving a laugh. "It is as if you are reading my mind, Deputy." She said as she was looking over the list of items before getting her own notes for orders so she could write them down with a fountain pen.
Looking up at him, she pulled her hair out of the way knowing that she would have to pin it up once he left. "How much are those sticky bun going for?" She asked as she got out a few pennies. "It is on me, your breakfast because you rushed here so fast to see if I was alright. Appreciate that." She said dropping a few coins into his hand since he had offered to go get the breakfast for her and she was going to take him up on that offer.
Once he had tipped his head and left, she went to lift her shotgun before putting it behind the counter and out of site before going to put her hair up in a proper style for a respectable woman. After that, she went about cleaning all of the things that did fall over in the damage to the shop, including the broken pieces of the broken window.
---
"It is hard to tell if your father... he seems quiet but how he handled the situation with Mr. Peterson... I have a lesser degree of respect for him since he is not ensuring your safety with a man that he expects that will one day wed you." Malcolm said wishing that he was not being so open. "I suppose I would do it differently if it were my daughter or sister is all." He mentioned as he thought for a moment. "I suppose that I will, won't do me any harm to go and meet the people of Paradise."
He could see the town in the distance as they were coming closer to it. "My momma in Tennessee has been on me since after the war to find me a bride so I suppose I should atleast talk to a few pretty young woman." He gave a half smile at that.

Rich went to the local bakery, seeing the excellent array of food set out. The whole shop smelled like baked sweet rolls and sugar. He put the money up for two sticky buns and some fresh milk before going back over to the shop. "Back..." he said then put the wrapped goods on the counter before moving around, sticking the money into the register. Wasn't any sense in her paying for the mewling but she looked like the type to protest him buying her some breakfast. He'll it had not been but ten cent out his pocket for the whole lot of it. Hd unwrapped the sticky buns made with cinnamon and drizzled with honey and a sugary glaze then urned grabbing two cups and pouring a bit of milk for them both. "They keep their milk underground. Keeps it nice and cold...better than coffee in the mornings," he chuckled, drinking his own and starting to take a bite.
"You need me to do anything else for you Mrs. Davis. If not, I will be on my way. Though I will have the carpenter by later," he smiled, taking another bite of the freshly baked roll. "That window should be fixed come evening."
-----
Roxanne smiled."I am sure you will find someone, and you can have me to tell you which ones are mean cusses and which ones are sweeter than rhubarb pie," she mused thoughtfully, seeing the outer buildings of town coming into sight. Once they reached, she pointed out the general store for him then grabbed her shawl from the wagon, riding her horse to right in front of the shop. Slipping down, she quickly tied the reins to a post near the water trough and walked into the shop, seeing the broken window. "Mrs. Davis, what on earth happened...Deputy..." she said regarding Rich's presence.
"Miss Addison...don't worry none. I am overseeing all repairs. Since you got some company, I will leave you to it," he smiled to the shop owner then walked out of the shop after tipping his hat. Quickly, Roxanne hung up her shawl, going to help her boss clean up. "I wish this had not of happened Mrs. Davis.." she sighed.

He supposed that it would be good to have a young woman from the town to help him out but then, he supposed that he did want a woman to get his kicks and thrills with. Naturally, he did not tell her this because despite her not being a 'lady' she was still the respectable sort and to him... that was a lady. Dropping her off at the little linen shop with the broken window, he frowned and said. "Are you sure that you do not want me to come in with you?" However, Miss Addison waved him off as he waited for her to go inside before he went on his way to the general store to place some orders and to pick up some items on the list that Mrs. Addison had given him this morning.
Entering, he looked around to see a pretty young woman behind the counter as he tipped his hat and said. "Morning, I am here to pick up the Addison's orders as well as a few things." She had been reading a book with the name. 'Little Women' as she looked surprised. Her spectacles on the bridge of her nose as she said. "Oh, hello... I did not see you there. The Addison's orders?" She asked as he nodded his head twice and she looked as if she were looking around for something as she pulled out a notebook and looked down. "Oh yes, we have a few things for them... let me just call my brother to come help you with some of the larger items as Malcolm shook his head. "No, Miss... I will be able to handle them." He gave a charming smile as she blushed. She looked to be about Miss. Addison's age if not a little older.
"Miss Jenny... I mean, Miss. Wood." She said since the general store was her father's and it was called Wood's General Store 'For all of your needs.' Everything could be ordered in within a month if they did not have it. "Miss Wood, thank you..." He said as she started busying herself with getting the order together for the handsome stranger. "Are you the Addison's new stablehand?" She asked curiously as he said. "Well, I am the stablemaster... take care of all the stablehands and other tasks." He mentioned making conversation.
---
Veronica was very thankful for the breakfast as she nodded to the Deputy wondering why he was interested in a woman like her. Well, she knew enough that he would not be so interested if he knew the truth about her. Waving him off, she looked to Roxanne and shrugged. "Well, it is what it is... I did scare the kid off and Deputy Harrison said that he could have the window replace until I order a new one." She said with a smile as she finished off her breakfast before saying. "Let's get the shop open and we can get some orders as well as some quilting done... could start selling some crafts as well as have examples. She did have booklets on how tos for those ladies trying something new as well.
