She tried to laugh it off. "Well, of course it is the year 1670..." She said as she slowly ate but her face was probably telling a different story as she thought of some sort of story. History was never her strong suit but Quebec was founded in 1608... or was it 1680. "Well, I suppose if that is possible?" She asked curiously doubting that it was but she supposed that a job as a maid while she was trying to return home would not be so bad. After all, she knew how to clean and dress hair... well, she could fake it?
"Yes, I just came from ship from New France." She said to him as she reached for something else to nibble on since she was feeling quite hungry. "I suppose it might be hard to find my friend in a city this size..." She sighed more to herself as she wondered how she could possibly return to her own time. There were things like this that seemed impossible as she doubted that Mr. lives with his Mother could help her but then, perhaps she was being too harsh on him.
"I would like to find a job of some sort, I was a maid for the governer in New France since my family take use over there but I missed my home land." She lied as she was most likely displaying poor manners as she tried to eat less like a monkey. Naturally, she was not going to talk about where she was from... atleast the truth of the matter since it was a silly idea to even think about. "You know... now that you mention it... I think that I did take a tumble..." She said as she felt her head suddenly start to pound and she felt herself feeling sick to her stomach as she covered her hand with her mouth and looked around seeing a pot garbage can thing as she abruptly threw up into it.
Wretching, Valerie wondered if there was a worse feeling as she closed her eyes feeling hungover.
---
Lucien stood a few steps away from her. "I do not see why not, a number of ladies of the court go about the gardens for daily walks." He mentioned to her from his observations. "I do not see ladies fencing but, I suppose a game of chess is something that I have seen being played." He was an excellent fencer rivalled only by one man who was his rival. Atleast, in his eyes but the man seemed to dismiss him. Naturally, this upset him. "Mistresses on the other hand... well, they tend to go about with their maids walking or going to the music room. Do you not know how to play an instrument or some other lady like activites. I suppose there is sewing and dancing..." He shrugged trying to name a few.
"I will not fence against you, Milady..." He said simply with a roll of his eyes. Tomboy types could be a troublesome sort of lady. "I knew of your love..." The boy had been cocky and had rushed off to battle but he was not so foolish to say this to her. "He was a good man, I only met him once however." He explained.

Arienne looked at him and sighed. "Very well then," she said wondering if she could of gotten a tighter and more reserved man then the one his majesty had selected as her personal guard. It was times like this that she wished for the company of the youngest of her older brothers Jaques. She walked into the palace with and up to the antechamber of the rooms that his majesty had given to her as she stayed on as his mistress and went to a small cabinet underneath where the fine wine was stored and came out with her personal stone chessboard. Slowly, she sat it down on the nearby table and took a seat.. Ignoring the stares of the servants who were off standing in a corner. No doubt there would be gossip but what was court without some gossip to keep it stirring like a hornets nest.
"Do you care to start the game Monsieur?" she asked him curiously as she adjusted her skirts tried to sit as comfortably as possible and slowly taking off her shawl to reveal her bare shoulders as the gown was off the shoulder. It was funny how men were concerned with a woman's modesty if they were to marry them but gowns fashioned these days were scandalously cut to show bare shoulders and cleavage. Granted most women wore shawls but inside, especially during the summer proved far to stifling.
"And Marie if you could please open a window ," she said simply, glancing at the young woman and giving a soft smile before turning to look back at Lucien.
-----
Jerome thought for a moment. "Well I believe King Louis has a new mistress and as he likes to spoil the objects of his lust and affection I will ask her if she requires a lady's maid. She already has two so perhaps one more would not hurt her. What lady's maid skills are you best at. For the purpose of suggesting you. If that does not pan out there is always a job as a seamstress to any local modiste," he spoke then watched her get up and toss up the contents of her stomach into the slop pot. He cleared his throat and got up, walking to her with a bit of wine. "Here, this and some bread should calm your stomach. Perhaps to much sweet wine?" he said a little amused. He doubted he had ever met another woman who was hungover. He should of noted it sooner. Her walk had been steady so he had not suspected drunkeness but now that he thought of it, it did make a perfect excuse for her muddled thoughts.

Standing there as he looked to the chessboard and to the young woman who was also the King's mistress and the lady that he was to protect with his life as he said. "Well, I suppose if you insist, milady." He said to her quietly as he sat himself down across from her staring at the chessboard with concentration. After a moment, he moved one of the pawn pieces and awaited for her to make her move since he had a feeling that she was very good at his game.
Himself, well... he was better at fencing but he had played a few games against his older brother and had won since his brother was a bit of an idiot. Neither himself nor his older brother were their father's favourite. No, that went to his younger sister who had been the angel of the family and had also died at a very young age of disease. This had made his father into a very bitter man. He watched her as she was concentrating of the chess game and he tilted his head, this one was a Tomboy, the opposite of his younger sister who had beeing thirteen when she had died but he remembered how she had spoke of going to Paris and to be presented in the court. She would have been a favourite among the courtiers since she had been very pretty with her blond ringlets.
"You said that you have brothers, no?" He asked her quietly thinking that if he was to protect her then he should know about the outspoken young Miss. "How many do you have?"
---
"I suppose it could have been some wine, yes..." She lied thinking that it was best to pretend to be a drunkard then to tell the truth as she wiped her mouth with a napkin wishing that she had a toothbrush or a piece of gum. She knew that she had some in her purse, which was up the stairs as she slowly stood up not feeling completely well as she took some of the bread and wine to drink. "Perhaps some water?" She asked thinking that alcohol would be alright but dehydration was not.
Once sitting down again looking slightly embarassed with herself, Valerie thought for a moment thinking what maids did... "Well, I am good at cleaning and picking up after people..." She said with a smile. "I had a few siblings who could be messy. I know how to put up hair... and you said something about sewing?" She would not be the best at sewing but one could lie sometimes and simply learn?
"Oh... and I know how to put on make up as well." She smiled since was something that she was good at. "Although, I do not really have any references. I did work for the lady of the governor in New France." Another lie but then, who was counting. "I have come up on hard times because I do not have a letter of recommendation."

Arienne slipped her fingers Over her locks and began to play the game with him, absently sipping her wine every now and again. She lifted her gaze to him. "Oui. Three. The eldest is Leon, then there is Henri and the youngest Jaques. He is also a twin to my sister Marguerite." she shrugged, watching his movements on the board. "Leon is twenty-seven and my father's heir. Henry is twenty-four, and my sister and Jaques are twenty-one. I was born of my father's second wife but she died in childbirth with me so I do not know of her. I was left to my brothers care more often thN not. My father was always more interested in palace life and politics than he was me and his younger sons. Margie was always sick, so it was just me and my brothers Henri, and Jaques. They taught me all I know with swords and knife throwing and of course chess was always a favorite," she laughed then took a deep breath and bit her bottom lip and sipped at her wine again.
She moved her piece when it came time for her time. "What about you Monsieur? You mentioned you had an older brother...Do the two of you get along?"
-----
"Oh well that is understandable. I will speak to mademoiselle about the posssibility of hiring you and see what will come of it," he promised then smokers. "You should probably keep the wine consumption down though....Mademoiselle LaRoque," he said amusedly. "Just for the sake of keeping a job. And feel free to stay as a guest in my home until you find other lodgings," he said then helped guide her to the chair. He stood straight and saw that it was near elven and he was going to be late for his night watch.
"I must be going now. Helene will watch over you. Just rest when I return in the morning I will have spoken to the woman and we'll see what comes of it.
He smirked and winked then grabbed his uniform and slipped it on including the large hat. Pestering thing but a uniform was a uniform. He kissed her knuckles then walked out, knowing he would return with a job. After all, the king's new mistress was a sweet girl who would no doubt allow a stranger be her lady's maid.

Glancing at her for a moment, he looked to the chessboard before speaking. "I have an older brother... we do not get along." He mentioned as he stoked his facial hair. "He can be a bit of a pompous ass and likes to think that he knows everything." He explained thinking of his older brother, Rene who was the Marquess la Charce. He hated his brother with passion at times, the man thought that he was God's gift to the world. "I did have a younger sister." He said quietly as he moved his chess piece awaiting her move.
"She was young when she died." He explained as he looked over to the maid servant named Mary who was opening the window. "Her name was Josephine." Lucien said in a quiet voice not liking to talk about his younger sister since it had been something that made him upset. "Anyways, she is missed." He explained as she made her next move.
"My father favored my sister, but it was because she was an angel before she died." He smiled for a moment making his next move. "My brother is like most men, he tends to dribble in debauchery." He mentioned as he leaned back in his chair becoming a bit more comfortable with the young woman. She was a strange one but he found that she was rather charming a way. He supposed that she was her not of choice but it was not his place to question that.
"Is your sister still sick?" He questioned curiously.
---
Staring at him as he left her alone on the dining room, Valerie slowly drank her wine and ate at the meal before being brought to the room that she was given. If anything, she was quite happy to be resting... it was as if she had a strange hangover.
That night, she slept and she had felt a little better in the morning as she had needed help once again with her clothing. "Merci beaucoup... it is just that in New France the clothing is so much different." She lied as she thought that perhaps she would help out with Helene and offered her services to the older woman.

Arienne nodded. "Oui. She is much stronger than she was when she was younger but she spends most of her time indoors. She is good at drawing and sewing and singing and playing instruments. I can draw marginally well, but I am truly terrible at sewing, singing I am to shy for and when it comes to instruments, I feel to idle," she admitted. "Margie is the lady my father wishes me to be" she mused the. Shrugged, moving a knight and putting it on where one of his pawns were, quickly taking the piece off the table. "But it is partly his fault I suppose, for letting me grow up a heathen..." she said then gave a soft smile.
They were still playing the game when his majesty entered. Seeing Jim, Arienne hastily rose and curtseyed and he walked over to her, kissing her. She didn't really like it much but did not stop him and he pulled away, he was smiling, slowly turning to Lucien. "I hope my fair one was no trouble M. Lucien." he seemed in a rather jolly mood and content to paw at her right in front of the servants and her appointed guardian. Her cheeks flamed and she closed her eyes, looking away. Who would of thought she would e ver become an adulteress.
"We have been playing chess your majesty," she said simply, glancing at Lucien then away again.

When Jerome returned the following morning, he had spoken to the king's mistress and the woman had kindly agreed ton hire this woman whom he himself knew little about. But who was he to judge as it was only god that could. Or so the priest would say onSunday mass.
He entered his house, quickly stripping out of his uniform the walked into the kitchn where he saw both women making food. "I spoke with Mlle. Renault and she readily agrees to hire you on," he promised then yawned and wiped his tired eyes. "Now if you ladies do not mind I am going to rest," he mused then went upstairs.
Helene clucked her tongue. "That poor lamb. I know well of Mlle. RenUlt. Sweetest young lady I have ever met. It is a shame her father whores her out to the king just so he can fill his coffers," ahe humphed then glanced at Valerie. "Your pretty enough, no telling if the King mighty fancy you. It may be treason to think so nut that man needs to leave the women that don't pursue ham lone. Then girls like Mlle. Renault do not get so troubled and clled whore behind their backs for the rest of their days..."

Standing as soon as the King of France had entered the room as he bowed, showing this respect to the man who ruled the country as he replied. "No, your Majesty..." He said quite seriously as he had been slightly embarassed that he had been leaning back and not standing as he ought to have been. Looking up as the King was holding his mistress, he could tell that she was feeling very uncomfortable about the situation as he had the discipline to not show emotion. Apart of him was feeling uncomfortable and perhaps a bit jealous but the man was the King of the land.
"She seems to be quite good at the game, your Majesty." Lucien said to King Louie as there was a quick exchange of glances between the two of them before he looked away. He did not know if he was to be dismissed or if he was to stay since his King was with his mistress. The other servants in the room heads were bowed. There was apart of him that wanted to finish the game and learn more about his charge.
---
Valerie tilted her head for a moment thinking that the older woman was being ridicious at the very idea. "Thank you but, I doubt something of the sort would happen to me." She chuckled as she was peeling turnips and not wanting to cut her finger as she was working. "The King goes after ladies of the court?" She thought of some of the things that she had seen during her time in Paris, France and knew that the King during this time was The Sun King himself.
"I suppose being the King then he can do whatever he wants... right?" Valerie said as she went on to cut up some vegetables for some of the food that was to be prepared when Monsieur Chevalier woke up from his rest. "I do not think that is fair to the ladies... unless he is hot or something?" She chuckled as the older woman stared at her. "Ah, I suppose he would not be... but it is summer." She said trying to explain herself without sounding foolish.

Louis smirked. "We shall have to play it later," he chuckled then glanced at Lucien. "That will be all for now Monsieur," he said dismissing Lucien offhandedly then taking Arienne in his arms and kissing her gently. "Let us enjoy ourselves before supper my sweet one. I have wanted to taste you all morning," he chuckled. She slowly nodded then walked with him to her bedchambers. Louis paused at the door. "And Monsieur, be sure to be back here in a couple of hours," he smiled. "I need you to accompany her to dinner..." he turned, entering the bedroom then shut the door with a click behind him.
-----
"You speak much differently than most French mademoiselle. " Helene eyed her curiously then shook her head. "The king gets everything handed to him. Valerie. Women, jewels, men playing sycophants. There are, of course, enemies of the crown. There always will be...I guess because his majesty was four when he was crowned, made it difficult for him to understand you can't shave everything. Then again, he is a royal so there is no telling how he was raised. Definitely far differnent then myself or Jerome. And you are a pretty one Mlle. Valerie. You could easily capture his attention."

Bowing, Lucien turned on his heel in a military fashion as he went to relax for a few hours in the guard's quarters of the palace. He had his own home that was not too far from the palace but because he was here so often, he also had his own quarters. "Yes, Your Majesty." He said simply as he walked out of the room. They would finish the game later perhaps as his mind thought of other things, like the buxom barmaid that he liked at his favorite tavern.
---
Valerie smiled at the older woman with a smile. "Ah, perhaps..." She did not think so much as she thought of the Sun King himself. Of course, to her he was only a King in a painting that she saw when she had been in a museum. The idea of meeting him made her feel uncomfortable, then being in another time was unbelievable as she continued her work.
Valerie was still feeling odd from whatever had happened as she wondered if there was anyone who had fallen off the Eiffel Tower as well. It would be weird if she was dead and had come back in another body.
Then, that seems impossible too. Perhaps, she was thinking too much on this.
---
He was escorting her to dinner a few evenings later as the two of them were quiet. She was to take on a new lady's maid but for some reason, he did not trust the woman despite being recommended by Jerome himself.
"I do not think that your new lady's maid knows what she is doing..." He gave her his opinion as he walked with her. He thought of saying something to his rival but he did not like the man.
---
It had been harder than she had thought as she had tried to dress Mlle. Arienne's hair and she was sure that she had done it well enough but, the curls were so hard to get. She had gotten some instruction from Helene since she broke down and told the older woman that she had not been a lady's maid but she did need a job like this.
Mlle. Arienne had been kind to her but she was exhausted from the job as she was waiting for her mistress to return from dinner.

Arienne looked at him and smirked. Her hair had taken aves till finally Marie had taken over till it was fixed correctly but Ari couldn't see turning her away. It was obvious the woman was desperate and with Jerome being one of her friends, she could hardly refuse him. She sighed the looked forward. "Oh come now Monsieur try not to be to harsh on her. She is good company, even if she is not so great at what other lady's maids are," she smiled then glanced at him. She had grown used to the king over the past few days. His coming and going from her chambers, his sexual appetites. And he did try to spoil her but she was one that overly cared for jewels and finery. But she wore them to please him and only that. Like tonight. He had given her a necklace made of diamonds and silver with matching ear rings and she had taken it and wore it with her evening dress for to ight because it would please him. But tommorrow they would be tucked away in a drawer and when the time came that he would tire of her, she would sell the jewels and place the money in the coffers of the poor house and orphanage. Lord knew those places were always suffering for money.
She sighed. "I fear Lucien, you are far to stern sometimes," she mused but then glanced at him with a smirk. "So will you be dancing with Mlle. Trouvelle tonight. She has eyes for you, then her mother does well." ari laughed softly, going to take a seat and putting the lacy napkin in her lap.
-----
Jerome slipped in through one of the many hidden passages of the palace intending to look in on the woman he had found roaming the streets. He knocked on Arienne's chamber door then entered, giving s smile when he say Valerie just sitting there. "No escort to dinner?" he asked with a chuckle as he approached her. It seemed the other two maids were gone, slaving Valerie to suffer in boredom alone. "I can take you down if you would like," he suggested, trying to be as charming as possible. Se did not talk much about her home life back in New France, but he would like to think she was no in Concetta maid. So ething made him think she was not a maiden of the flesh, not that he minded fir she was no whore either.
No she was a good woman, a little clumsy in near everything she did but by no means a terrible slut. She had a sensuality about her though. Like a woman who knew all about sex. But then there were times when he as not so certain. She was certainly an enigma.
"Do you want to go down to dinner?"
